Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

AMU Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation focuses on the health care specialties meant to restore health and functional abilities for people after acute illness or injury such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, heart surgery, amputation, joint replacement, sports injuries, or spinal disorders. Our graduates are dedicated to advancing their knowledge of effective physiotherapy and rehabilitation therapies and delivering the best possible patient care. The duration of education is four years, and the education language is Turkish. Patient contact is an integral part of the educational program at an early stage, provided with summer practices and clinical training rounds.

To train physiotherapists who constitute role models in terms of service, education, research, and professional development; loyal to ethical principles; and to practice physiotherapy and rehabilitation, assessing and planning in the ways of the profession.

Students must successfully finish all courses and internships set by the program taking at least 240 ECTS credits in total, to be granted the Bachelor’s degree. Graduation eligibility is determined by academic average score. For this purpose, the sum of the weighted scores of all courses taken throughout the education is divided by the sum of ECTS values.

Ergotherapy

Occupational therapy is a client-centered health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life through the therapeutic use of activities. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement). Unlike other professions, occupational therapy helps people function in all of their environments (e.g., home, work, school, community) and addresses the physical, psychological, and cognitive aspects of their well-being through engagement in occupation. Equipped with a solid grounding in both the medical and social sciences, occupational therapists work with people of all ages across the entire lifespan, from newborn infants to elders in hospice care.

Speech and Language therapy

Speech-language therapists (SLTs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, voice, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Through clinical and scientific work, SLPs act as members of professional medical teams to increase the quality of life for a diverse population of varying ages and health statuses including healthy individuals, patients, and people with special needs. Speech and language therapy is recognized as a legitimate and autonomous occupation in Turkey as well as all over the world.

The Speech and Language Therapy program graduates take the title of “Speech and Language Therapist”. This title grants the degree holder the right to work in the field of prevention, assessment and functional diagnosis and rehabilitation of communication, language, speech, voice and swallowing disorders. Working with healthy, special-needs individuals and patients from neonate to old age, the Speech and Language Therapy program graduates are equipped with skills to practice their profession competently, through interdisciplinary interaction, abiding by the professional ethics and values and following the latest scientific and technological developments.

Midwifery

The profession of midwifery, which has existed since ancient times, has taken its place among the contemporary professions with programs at the master and doctorate level. The International Midwifery Confederation (ICM), The World Health Organization, and UNICEF emphasize mother-infant mortality and “the need for more midwives than the world is always there” to reduce cesarean rates. The aim of our university is to give graduates who will be able to work independently, take the principle of life-long learning, and carry scientific work and summarize the midwifery profession, taking into consideration the needs of the country with the department opened in 2014-2015 academic year.

Our midwifery program aims to train professional midwives to service in every field being equipped with knowledge and talents, absorbing midwifery philosophy and ethic values, embracing lifelong learning, and having management and research skills in accordance with universal values, realities, and requirements of the country.

Nursing

This education is aimed to teach graduated nurses who could protect, maintain and improve the health of a person, family and society in accordance with universal values, national and international standards, realities and needs of the country; conduct education, management, and research roles; who are ready for a nursing role that is getting autonomy; could share knowledge; has ethical values; make people feel valuable themselves; are sensitive for social events, competent in their profession and preferred in health care areas; who could take roles for scientifical research in health services, go on for postgraduate and doctorate; will be able to be academician in future and who could continue professional and individual improvement with the life span learning approach.

Nutrition and Dietetics

AMU Department of Nutrition and Dietetics aims to train individuals who will take an active role in increasing awareness about health preservation, life span, quality of life, treatment of illnesses, as well as sufficient and balanced diet with a focus on the study of the relation between health and nutrition. The duration of education is four years, and the language of education is Turkish. By the end of the third year, students attend a three-week summer practice program. During the last year, students follow their internship program, a supervised seven-month practice program with a general emphasis. Placement sites are with hospitals, diet/fitness centers, long-term care facilities, and county health departments. These students are expected to actively participate in solving of nutrition-related issues under the supervision of their professors and specialized dieticians.

The aim of the department of Nutrition and Dietetics is to graduate expert professionals, defining and evaluating the problems for individuals and society, seeking the solutions, determining energy and food requirements of different age groups, giving consultancy and education for individuals and groups, preparing and implementing specific diets for diseases, carrying out management and organization activities at the institutions rendering catering services and food industry, conduct training, implementation, and research activities.
